Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server 5.5 (Source)

Red Hat is a veteran in the software industry free and commercial distribution Red Hat Enterprise Linux is the exponent of the company in the professional field of GNU / Linux. Last March 30 was released version 5.5 RHEL with some very interesting developments.

RHEL 5.5 offers greater compatibility with different hardware configurations , supporting the new multicore processors from different manufacturers: Intel Nehalem EX, AMD Opteron ™ 6000 Series e IBM Power 7AMD.

Working together with manufacturers, processors and distributors such as Dell, Fujitsu, Hitachi, DEC or HP will offer RHEL 5.5 with different server configurations, offering scalable, high performance and reliability. RHEL is designed to manage critical services and high performance.

At the same time has worked to add new drivers for various new devices such as network cards, storage devices, update ALSA or management process.

Another pillar of this update are the improvements in virtualization system KVM , on the work of Red Hat in the field of virtualization and I talked about in Genbeta. In fact, many companies are working to take advantage of virtualization capabilities offered by multi-core processors today.
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.5 includes components that provide functionality for simple protocol for Independent Computing Environments ( SPICE ), a remote display protocol. These new components have been designed for use in conjunction with Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization products.

It also has improved support for managing clients with Cluster Management Suite or the device PCI , updated several kernel drivers and improving the cradle of these devices in virtual systems.

Paged memory management has been improved using HugePages and libvirt to make a copy of the virtual system memory. When combined with large page tables and nested tables in hardware, performance is significantly improved in the virtual system.

RHEL 5.5 also offers improved integration with other systems that may arise in enterprise environments, especially computers and Microsoft software systems. That’s why we support the document OOXML Microsoft Office 2007 in OpenOffice, improved compatibility with Windows environments Samba 7 and boot support to virtual machines using Microsoft-based services PXE .

The “new file system and storage management get some improvements, such as queue management at the kernel scheduler CFQ / O, the new mount options GFS2 or updating CIFS .
